The potential for this technology’s usefulness in order to shape an artificial diamond into a perfect sphere is vast.
In 2003 the research center synthesized the first Hime diamond -- a tiny grain of diamond measuring less than 1 mm wide. The center combined carbon atoms by subjecting them to 150,000 times the standard atmospheric pressure and temperatures of 2,300°C.
By 2010, the research team was able to create Hime diamonds up to 1 cm wide, with plans to commercialize the diamond. “As a product for industrial use, its lifetime is several times longer than that of an ordinary diamond," the university's Tetsuo Irifune said.
Hime diamonds are far harder than naturally formed diamonds. They have a uniform degree of hardness throughout their structure, whereas there are changes within parts of a natural diamond.
